A pound cake is the classical creamed batter in its plainest form: equal weights of butter, sugar, egg and flour. Its historical value was that the formula could be remembered and scaled without written measures, and its present value on a site like this one is that it isolates the creaming method with nothing else going on.
IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM IT HAS NO CHEMICAL LEAVENER. All of the gas comes from air beaten into the butter and sugar, and from steam. That makes it the clearest demonstration there is of what creaming actually does: sugar crystals with sharp edges tear pockets into softened butter, and those pockets are the cells the cake rises around. Modern recipes usually add baking powder as insurance, which is a real change to the mechanism rather than a refinement.

Butter too cold will not hold air, because it is too stiff to be torn; butter too warm has lost the crystal structure that holds the pockets, and the air escapes. The window is narrower than most recipes imply and is the single commonest cause of a heavy pound cake.
THE OTHER CLASSIC FAULT IS CURDLING. Adding cold egg quickly to creamed butter breaks the emulsion; the batter looks separated and the finished cake is coarser and slightly greasy because the fat was no longer dispersed. Egg at room temperature, added gradually, is the whole fix.
A MADEIRA CAKE IS A CLOSE RELATIVE AND NOT A SYNONYM. It is a British creamed cake with a slightly higher flour proportion and traditionally a lemon flavouring, giving a firmer crumb. What the equal-weights rule is actually doing
Each of the four ingredients is carrying a job, and the ratio balances them against each other.
Flour provides structure and starch. Egg provides more structure, water and emulsification. Butter tenderises by interrupting that structure, and carries air. Sugar sweetens, tenderises by competing for water, and is the abrasive that makes creaming work at all.
Change one weight and something has to give. More flour gives a firmer, drier cake — which is roughly what distinguishes a Madeira. More sugar gives a softer, sweeter, more fragile one that browns faster. The rule is a starting point that happens to be balanced, not a law.
