Very commonCookie spread is a race between the dough flowing outward as fat melts and the structure setting as water evaporates and proteins coagulate. Fat that begins warm melts sooner, so flow starts earlier and continues longer before setting arrests it.

How to tell after the fact: Excessive spread with a greasy, thin edge points to fat that was too warm. Visible butter on the tray points to a broken lamination, which can come from fat that was too warm OR too cold — see the croissant fault for the observation that separates them.
What to change
Chill the dough before baking
Refrigerate the shaped dough for at least half an hour, or overnight for a larger effect. The dough should be cold to the touch when it goes into the oven.
Cookies and biscuits that spread too far. Also improves flavour in a rested dough.
Trade-off: Takes time, and a very cold dough may need a slightly longer bake.
