Melted vs softened butter
The same ingredient in two states, and the difference decides whether the recipe has a leavening mechanism at all.
The short answer
Softened butter is plastic and can hold beaten air; melted butter cannot, because melting destroys the crystal network the air was going to be held in. In a creamed cake that is the difference between a mechanism and no mechanism. In a cookie or a muffin, where the leavening is chemical, it is a texture choice rather than a failure — and it is a genuine choice, because melted butter gives a denser, chewier result on purpose.

“Melted butter always makes cookies spread more” is close, and not true
It usually does, and the reason is worth having because it identifies the exceptions.\n\nMelted butter spreads more for two compounding reasons: no air was beaten in to hold the dough up, and the dough starts warmer and slacker so it flows before the structure sets. Both are real.\n\nBUT THE DOUGH TEMPERATURE AT THE MOMENT IT MEETS HEAT IS WHAT ACTUALLY DECIDES SPREAD, and melting is only one route to a warm dough. A melted-butter dough that has been chilled for several hours spreads LESS than a creamed dough put straight onto a warm tray — the fat is solid again and there is no beaten air holding a fragile structure that will collapse.\n\nSo the useful statement is that melting removes the aeration and tends to raise the dough temperature, and it is the second half that most of the spread comes from. Which is why chilling is the standard fix and why it works for doughs made either way.
Why chilling melted butter does not undo it
This is the part most advice omits, and it costs people a cake.\n\nSoftened butter is not simply butter at a particular temperature — it is butter whose original fine crystal structure is intact and merely pliable. Melting dissolves that structure entirely. What forms on cooling is a different arrangement, generally coarser, and coarse fat crystals are measurably worse at holding air than fine ones.\n\nSo butter melted in the microwave and then put in the fridge comes back hard rather than plastic, and creams poorly even once it has softened again. There is no way back within the timescale of an afternoon.\n\nThe practical rule follows: if the recipe creams, do not melt the butter at all. Take it out early, or cut it into cubes to warm faster.
