Ingredient explorer

Identify which bake families are reachable from a set of ingredients, and what is missing for the ones that are not.

What it answers

What could I make from what I have, and what would I need for the rest?

What it assumes

  • IT REASONS ABOUT FUNCTION, NOT QUANTITY. Every verdict comes from which functions your ingredients perform — structure, aeration, gas retention, binding and the rest — read from the same relationship graph the rest of BakeHQ uses.
  • PERFORMING THE SAME FUNCTION IS NOT THE SAME AS BEING INTERCHANGEABLE. Where a product needs structure from a gluten network, structure from a starch gel does not satisfy it, and the tool says so rather than quietly accepting it.
  • A TECHNIQUE IS A PREREQUISITE, NOT AN INGREDIENT. Lamination, creaming and kneading are surfaced as things still required. No pantry contains a process.
  • AN UNLISTED CULTURE IS AN ABSENT CULTURE. Where a product can only be raised by a maintained starter, having flour and water is not having one, and the tool will not assume otherwise.
  • REFUSING IS A RESULT. Where nothing is plausible, that is the answer, with the specific missing requirement named. A confident wrong answer would be worse than no answer.

What you have

British and American names both work. Searching baking soda finds bicarbonate of soda.

Live cultures you keep

Do you keep a live culture?

A maintained culture is something you either keep or do not. BakeHQ will never assume one from flour and water.

Or start from a common pantry

Your selection

Nothing selected yet. Add what is actually in your kitchen — the Explorer works from what you have rather than from what a recipe wants.

What it cannot tell you

QUANTITIES ARE NOT ASSESSED. BakeHQ models which functions an ingredient performs, never how much of it you need. Having flour, sugar and an egg says nothing about whether you have them in workable proportions.

RATIOS AND FORMULATION ARE NOT ASSESSED. A structurally plausible result is not a working formula, and two selections that look identical here can behave completely differently at different ratios.

IT PRODUCES NO METHOD AND NO RECIPE. There is no order of operations, no temperature and no time, because none of that is in the graph and inventing it is the failure this tool is built to avoid.

EQUIPMENT IS NOT PART OF THE DECISION. Nothing is rejected for want of a tin or a mixer. Equipment requirements are real but they are not modelled into this reasoning.

IT REASONS ONLY OVER WHAT BAKEHQ HAS MODELLED. An ingredient with no recorded functions contributes nothing here, and a product with no recorded requirements is reported as unassessable rather than guessed at.

A PLAUSIBLE RESULT IS A STRUCTURAL VERDICT, NOT A PREDICTION THAT IT WILL BE GOOD. It says the necessary functions are present, which is a floor rather than a promise.

BakeHQ would like to record anonymous usage — which pages are read, whether searches return anything, whether a diagnosis reaches an answer. No personal data, no advertising profile, and nothing you type is ever sent. The site works identically either way.
